Zofia MITTELSTAEDT
born KULĄGOWSKA

( 1893-1963 )
Born in south-central Poland, daughter of an engineer. In 1939, expelled from her home in Poznan by the German occupants, she spent the war years in Warsaw. Her husband Zygmunt Mittelstaedt, who headed the Committee to Aid Widows and Orphans, was arrested by the Gestapo and perished in the Auschwitz concentration camp. In 1951 Zofia made her way to Paris, then England and came to Canada in 1954 to join her daughters, Krystyna Madeyska and Zofia Czengery (below). Died at age 70.
Andrzej MADEYSKI
( 1906-1993 )
Born near Lwow, graduated as an architect from the Lwow Polytechnic where he subsequently taught. In 1939 fought against the Germans (September campaign), then made his way to England through Romania, Greece and France. In 1941-1945 served as lieutenant at the headquarters of the Polish Army and in the Home Ministry of the Polish government-in-exile in London. After demobilization, from 1946 to 1948, he taught the history of architecture at London's Polish University College, while collaborating with local engineering firms.

Moved to Montreal in 1949 and became affiliated with Gaston et Parant Architectes. Belonged to Polish architects' societies as well as Canada's Royal Institute of Architecture and Québec's Ordre des Architectes, and organized many architectural exhibitions. Died at the age of 87 in Rawdon, mourned by wife Krystyna (above).
Krystyna MADEYSKA
born MITTELSTAEDT

( 1914-1998 )
Born in central Poland. In 1938, married lawyer Alfred Sas-Korczynski and spent the war years in Warsaw. Took part in the resistance (Home Army), and after the Warsaw Uprising was deported to a German prisoner camp in Burg. After the war, she and her husband worked in the Osnabrück branch of the Polish Red Cross, then made their way to Belgium and Paris. Came to Montreal in 1953, was active in the Committe to Aid Polish Children. Separated from her husband in 1964, she remarried in 1969 and settled in Rawdon with her second husband, architect Andrzej Madeyski (below). She died aged 84.
Zofia CZENGERY
born MITTELSTAEDT

( 1917-1994 )
Born in Lodz. In 1939, she joined the Resistance fighters against the German invaders. Arrested by the Gestapo in 1942 she was condemned to death. Her sentence was commuted to imprisonment in the Auschwitz concentration camp (November 1942 - January 1945) then in Bergen-Belsen until the end of the war. Zofia married Leon Czengery (below) at the end of 1945. She served in the Women's Auxiliary Batallion attached to General Maczek's division in Germany, until she was evacuated to England in 1947. Seven years later she emigrated to Canada with her husband and their children, Krystyna, Alfred and Barbara. In Montreal, she worked as head of a hospital's supply division, while also being very active in Polish charitable and veterans' organizations. Retired in Rawdon, she died at 77.
Leon CZENGERY
( 1916-2014 )
Born in Baku, Russia, on the eve of the Revolution. The family moved back to Poland when Leon was 4. Educated in Warsaw, Leon then completed the Military Academy in Torun and served in a light-artillery unit. Wounded in battle in 1939 and captured by the enemy, he spent the rest of the war in a German POW camp. After liberation, he married Zofia Mittelstaedt in 1945. In 1947 they moved to England, where their three children were born. In 1954 the family emigrated to Canada. Leon worked at the Canadian National Railways, first as surveyor and ultimately as a rail constructor, retiring after 27 years. Was active in the Polish Veterans' Association.

Moved to Rawdon where, after the death of his first wife (above), he enjoyed a long and loving relationship with Daniela Agopsowicz. They both loved music and the arts and were actively involved in Rawdon's Centre d'interprétation multiethnique. Leon died at age 98.
