Vołodymyr SOŁOWIJ
( 1892-1958 )
Ukrainian patriot, born in Lwow. Studied agriculture at the University of Wroclaw. Served in the Austrian army during World War I and was incarcerated by the Russians. Upon his release he served in the Polish Lancers. In 1918 he took part in the Ukrainian diplomatic mission to Copenhagen as an advisor. Was also involved in the negotiations for a Polish-Ukrainian agreement between Poland's head of state J. Pilsudski and the Cossack hetman S.Petlura. After the Soviet-Polish War, Solowij received Polish citizenship and worked towards improving Polish-Ukrainian relations. Following the outbreak of World War II, he served on the General Staff of the Polish army. Made his way to London where he worked for Poland's government-in-exile, representing Ukrainian affairs. Emigrated to Canada in 1952. Died at the age of 66.
His brother, Tadeusz Sołowij, lies in the lot no. 14 [lot C1 014], and his sister, Zofia Sulima Popiel is buried in lot no. 36 [lot C1 175].

Born in Lwow. Wife of Volodymyr Solowij (above). Graduate of the Sacred Heart High School in Lwow. Arrested in Krakow by the Germans after the Warsaw Uprising and sentenced to hard labour in the Third Reich. Lived in London after the war and emigrated to Canada with her husband in 1952. Was a highly accomplished artist - painter (water-colours), pianist and singer, translator of the works of German and French poets as well as an author of short stories in her own right. Died in Montreal at the age of 99, mourned by her family.
Her sister Antonina Sołowij lies in the grave no. 14 [lot C1 014].
