Ewa BLIŹNIAK FILAR KOZAK
( 1901-1999 )
Born in Poland's Cracow region, married Pawel Filar, then Karol Kozak. During the war, she was deported for forced labour in Germany with her son, Jozef, who died there. Returned to Poland after liberation. In 1959, joined her daughter Zofia in Canada. Had 6 children: Zofia (who married Jan Modzelewski, (below), Jozef, Kazimiera, Stanislaw, Marysia and Krysia. Died aged 98.
Jan MODZELEWSKI
( 1913-1999 )
Born in Poland. In 1939 fought against the invading Germans, was taken captive but escaped. However was soon arrested by the Soviet army and deported to Siberia. Freed in 1941, Jan joined the newly-forming Polish army under general Anders. He served in the North-African and Italian campaigns including the battle for Monte-Cassino and was awarded many medals. Demobilized in England, he emigrated to Canada in 1947, married Zofia Filar in 1949. Father of Rita and Yasmin. Besides working in Montreal he volunteered in many Polish community organizations. Died aged 86.
