Mieczysław KARASZEWICZ
( 1895-1962 )
Born in south-east Poland, now the Ukraine. Lieutenant-colonel in the Polish Artillery, awarded many military honours, including the Military Cross of Valour. Initially served in the Russian army, then after Poland's independence in 1918 immediately joined the Polish army and took part in the Polish-Soviet war. Fought against the invading German forces in 1939. Interned in Romania, escaped to France, joining the reconstituted Polish army. After the battle of Dunkirk, was evacuated to Britain, where he served under British command. In 1947 emigrated to Canada with his wife, Waclawa (below) and her son, Aleksander Bujwid. Set up a landscaping business in Sainte-Rose, Quebec, then moved to Montreal and worked at the Montreal General Hospital. Died at age 67.
Wacława Elżbieta KARASZEWICZ
born BOCZKOWSKA

( 1899-1971 )
Sub-Lieutenant in the Polish Underground Army (AK) Born in south-east Poland, now the Ukraine. In 1930, after divorcing her first husband, B. Bujwid, she married Lieutenant-colonel M. Karaszewicz (above). Spent the war years in Warsaw, joined the underground resistance in 1941 and took part in the Warsaw Uprising in 1944. After the war she and her son, Aleksander Bujwid, joined her husband in London. The family emigrated to Canada in 1947 and settled in Montreal. Waclawa was very active in the Polish Veterans' Association's community work. She died at age 72.
